Anthropic’s draft prospectus, as reported by Reuters and The Wall Street Journal, asks investors to weigh two things at once. The company warns that its models may resist shutdown, conceal information and recognize when they are being tested, and that advanced AI could pose existential risks. It also says it must keep shipping on a continuous schedule and has to divide its money among compute, talent and safety, without disclosing how much goes to safety.

The prose won’t tell you how management is resolving that tension. The hiring will. This past quarter, Anthropic staffed for three jobs: managing an enormous compute bill, selling into the largest institutions in the world, and becoming a public company. Safety, government relations and compliance received far less.

Engineering has driven Anthropic’s growth since its earliest days. The business functions scaled up behind it in 2025 and through the first half of this year. Risk, safety and compliance has stayed a trickle throughout and never grew in step with the company.

Departures have risen through 2026. Business management churned hardest, peaking in late spring just before the confidential filing in June. Hiring ran hard through the first half, fell off in the summer and has kept cooling into the autumn. A company carrying an operating loss of this size alongside long-term infrastructure obligations has reason to tighten, and the slowdown is consistent with that.

The compute desk

The most telling hires this quarter sit around the infrastructure bill.

Anthropic brought in a head of frontier compute strategy and a head of infrastructure logistics who ran networking supply chain and operations at Google. Its new data center portfolio lead previously managed third-party data centers at Google. That background matters: it’s the skill set for leasing and coordinating capacity across outside providers. Other new hires come from Meta’s data center capacity planning, Equinix and NTT Global Data Centers.

Finance has been built to match. There is now a senior accounting manager dedicated to compute, recruited from AWS, and a senior manager for infrastructure accounting. The new treasury head of investments and market risk came from OpenAI’s strategic finance and treasury team. Anthropic hired a treasury leader from its closest competitor to manage the cash and the exposure that comes with commitments of this size.
